Marcus Aurelius, the stoic philosopher-emperor, epitomizes the spirit of the PhD through his relentless pursuit of wisdom, unwavering dedication to self-improvement, and profound commitment to the greater good. In his meditations, he exemplifies the quintessential qualities of a scholar—curiosity, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility. Aurelius’s reflections, often written amidst the turmoil of leading an empire, reveal a mind unceasingly engaged in the search for truth, much like the PhD journey, which demands rigorous inquiry, critical thinking, and the courage to challenge established norms.
It showcases Marcus Aurelius at his zenith, with the inscription “Summa Proficientia” adorning the top of the medallion, symbolizing Highest Proficiency. At the bottom, the Latin phrase “Doctoratus Gradus,” translating to “Doctorates Degree” to honor and acknowledge the achievement.
On the reverse side of our creation, the PhD is prominently displayed, accompanied by the Latin phrase “Per Aspera Ad Astra” at the top, meaning “Through difficulties to the stars.” Below PhD, the Latin words “Doctoratus De Philosophiae” are featured, highlighting the Doctorates in Philosophy.
About the Designer: Our PhD presentation was designed exclusively for Doctorum by artist, philosopher and polymath, Thor Weldon.
